Tired all day. Wide awake at night. Here’s what’s usually going on.

One of the most common patterns I see in clinic is women whose nervous systems are doing that constant low-level hum of anxiety, the overthinking at 10pm, the lying awake at 3am replaying conversations with consultants, the subtle but relentless “what if this doesn’t work” thoughts that creep in every cycle.

We can track ovulation, tweak progesterone support, optimise egg quality… but if someone’s nervous system is permanently braced, that underlying tension doesn’t just stay in the mind. It shows up in sleep, digestion and cycle regulation. The body never quite feels at ease enough to properly relax.

This often links back to stress hormones not transitioning smoothly from “on” to “off”. Cortisol itself isn’t the enemy, it’s essential for focus and energy – but when the body doesn’t regulate well, everything else has to compensate.

Heart 7 is one of my favourite acupressure points for this pattern. I use it a lot when someone tells me, “I’m so tired, but I just can’t switch off.” It supports the nervous system, helps settle that internal hum and gently encourages the body into a more regulated state.

To find it, look at your wrist crease and move in line with your little finger. You’ll feel a small hollow beside the the rounded bone. Apply gentle but firm pressure or small circles for around 90 seconds on each side.

This is lovely before bed, during a 3am wake-up, or anytime you feel wired but tired.

Like most things in the body, nervous system regulation responds best to consistency. Small, regular signals that it’s safe to relax really do add up.

Pericardium 6 is one of my go-to acupressure points in clinic, especially in the luteal phase, because it helps the body shift out of stress and into a more settled, receptive state.

When the nervous system is calmer:

To find PC6, measure three finger widths down from the wrist crease, between the two tendons on the inner forearm.

Cortisol isn’t the enemy, it’s essential, but when it stays elevated for too long it starts to interfere with ovulation, progesterone production and how safe your nervous system feels in your body and this is something I see all the time in clinic with women who are trying to conceive or who feel like their hormones have gone a bit off track.

When someone comes to see me with suspected cortisol issues, I don’t jump straight to telling them to meditate more or do less, because that usually adds another thing to the list, instead we look at patterns, how their sleep, cycle timing, energy dips and stress load interact and we consider symptoms alongside testing where appropriate so we’re not guessing.

Alcohol is processed through the liver and the liver plays a key role in hormone balance for both women and men, which means regular drinking can influence oestrogen balance, progesterone production, thyroid function and on the male side, sperm quality, hormone signalling and overall reproductive health.

This is why I often see fertility markers improve when couples reduce or remove alcohol in a way that’s sustainable, not perfect, but aligned with what their bodies actually need right now.

Stress doesn’t have to be dramatic to affect your hormones 🫣 Often it’s the tiny, constant pressures - emails, rushing around, multi-tasking, worrying about everyone, saying ‘yes’ to everything - that create the biggest hormonal shifts.

Here’s how stress shows up in your hormones:

1️⃣ Cortisol rises This can lower progesterone, impact ovulation and change your cycle length - not helpful for conception.

2️⃣ Sleep gets lighter and melatonin, which is essential for egg quality, drops. When egg quality is lower, it’s harder for fertilisation to happen and for the embryo to implant in the uterus.
