I think most of us recognise this feeling.

Nothing has gone dramatically wrong, but your patience feels shorter than usual, you’re more easily irritated by things that normally wouldn’t bother you and it feels like you’re carrying around a level of tension that you can’t quite put your finger on.

I see it a lot in clinic, particularly when life has been busy for a while and there hasn’t been much space to properly process everything that’s been going on.

In Chinese medicine, this is often a sign that the body is struggling to keep up with the emotional and mental load it’s been carrying.

Heart 8 is one of the acupressure points I use when someone feels emotionally overloaded, restless or like everything is sitting a little closer to the surface than usual.

You’ll find it between the 4th and 5th fingers on your palm, where the tip of your little finger lands when you make a loose fist.

Apply firm, comfortable pressure for around 60–90 seconds on each side.

Sometimes the goal isn’t to fix anything or force yourself to feel differently. Sometimes it’s simply about creating a small moment where your body gets the message that it can soften a little.

If you’re trying to conceive, your body needs moments where it genuinely feels safe.

When we’re stressed, our nervous system stays switched on and our body prioritises survival over repair, hormone balance and reproduction.

One of my favourite acupressure points to use is Pericardium 6 (PC6) because it’s simple, calming and takes less than two minutes. To find it, measure three finger widths down from your wrist crease and locate the space between the two tendons on your inner forearm, then apply firm, gentle pressure or massage in slow circles for 60–90 seconds on each wrist.

It’s a lovely place to start, but it’s just one of several points I teach my patients depending on where they are in their cycle and what’s going on in their body.

Which one sounded most like you? 👇

Sleep is one of the first things I ask about in clinic because the way you sleep often tells me far more than people realise.

If you’re the “Can’t Switch Off” type, where you feel exhausted but your brain won’t stop thinking, I’m often thinking about stress patterns and whether your cortisol hasn’t dropped properly at the end of the day.

If you’re the 2am Waker, waking around the same time most nights, I’ll often start asking questions about blood sugar because overnight dips can be one of the reasons your body wakes you to bring it back up again.

If you’re the Luteal Phase Waker, where your sleep is absolutely fine until the week before your period and then suddenly becomes lighter or more broken, progesterone is one of the first things I’m thinking about. As progesterone begins to fall, it’s very common for sleep to change.

And if you’re the “Hot & Awake” type, where you wake feeling hot, restless or constantly throwing the duvet off, hormonal fluctuations could be playing a part, particularly during perimenopause.

The important thing is that these are all very different sleep patterns, which means they often point towards very different things.

This is one of the reasons I rarely look at symptoms in isolation. Poor sleep, PMS, painful periods, low energy, digestive changes and cycle irregularities are often all part of the same conversation and when you start joining the dots, your body begins to make a lot more sense.

You’ll find it on the top of your foot. Start in the gap between your big toe and second toe, then slide your finger back towards your ankle until you feel a natural dip, just before the bones meet.

Using gentle pressure or small circles for 1-2 minutes on each foot can help calm the nervous system and encourage a sense of emotional balance.

It’s simple, takes less than five minutes and is one of the points I come back to again and again.

Pre-period spotting is one of the symptoms I pay close attention to in clinic especially for women trying to conceive.

When it happens month after month, it often gets brushed off as “normal” but spotting before a period often tells me the body isn’t holding the uterine lining as steadily as it should in the second half of the cycle.

This is one of the acupressure points I use most when progesterone support and luteal phase stability are part of the picture.

You’ll find it on the inner side of the big toe, right beside the corner of the nail bed.

Apply gentle but firm pressure for around 60–90 seconds on each side.

It can feel surprisingly tender.

Used consistently through the luteal phase, this can help support stability and reduce spotting before a period arrives.

A little brown spotting.
Sometimes pink.
A few days before your period properly arrives.

And so many women are told it’s “normal”.

But in clinic, I pay attention to it.

Because spotting before a period is often a sign that progesterone isn’t being sustained well enough in the second half of the cycle.

Progesterone is what helps maintain the uterine lining after ovulation.

So when levels begin to drop too early, the lining can start breaking down ahead of time and that’s often what you’re seeing as spotting.

This is one of the reasons I focus so much on the luteal phase with my fertility patients.

Because what happens after ovulation matters just as much as ovulation itself.
